Have you read Elizabeth Bear's duology _Ink and Steel_ and _Hell and Earth_? Pro-fic, but total Will/Kit RPF. Absolutely wonderful voice that feels Elizabethan without being unreadable.

Come to think of it, maybe it's time I reread those.

I have! I ADORE those two books with a burning passion. I've been itching for a re-read, but they are in a hard-to-reach box at the moment, which is tragic. I honestly got nearly to the end of book one thinking the ship was never ever going to happen and then BOOM. And then there was Lucifer? I enjoyed the absolute weirdness. And the language, as you said, pretty but flowed easily.
