Frequently Asked Questions
What is Podfic Bingo
This can be a way for podficcers to try different things when podficcing to hone their art. A way for people to get out of their comfort zone or try something they've always wanted to but maybe didn't have the courage to.
Some things you try may fail but it's all about learning and doing new things. Don't be afraid!
How do I interpret the prompts?
The short answer: anyway you want.
Longer answer: We're open to all kinds of interpretations to prompts. So long as you can present a valid argument for how it's connected to the prompt, that's awesome.
For example: If you had the prompt "Accent" you could choose to attempt a Czech accent while reading a Zelenka POV Stargate Atlantis fic. Or, you could decide to read a fic in a completely unrelated accent, like reading an SPN fic with a French accent. I would say it's cheating to read in your own, natural accent though, even if it matches the character.
Does the prompt have to be incorporated into the entire podfic?
It can be but it doesn't have to.
So, if you had the prompt "read angrily" you could choose a fic that is all about the characters arguing or, you could choose a fic with a scene where the characters are arguing. Both of these fics give you a chance to practice your angry voice.
Or, you could take it in the original spirit of the challenge and choose a fic where the characters aren't angry at all but read it with an angry voice.
I would like to clarify though, this comm is all about trying out reading/podficcing skills you might not use that regularly. The prompt is aimed at how you read something, not what you're reading. You're not going to get the full advantage of the comm if you simply choose a fic to match your prompt and read it as you would any other fic. Give the prompt some emphasis, unleash your acting!
Can the same fic be used for more than one prompt?
Yes! As described above, the original idea was to try out the prompts on a single fic. So you could do multiple recordings of the same fic trying out different prompts.
You can also count a single podfic for more than one prompt. If, for example, you had the prompts "read slowly," "add music" and "read sadly" you could incorporate all those prompts into a single podfic.
Is there a minimum/maximum length?
Nope! You could do a 30 second podfic or a 30 hour one. However long it takes you to incorporate the prompt(s) is long enough.
How do I post?
Whenever you finish a prompt, you can post it to this comm, using the following format:
Title:
Reader:
Bingo Square(s):
Fandom:
Pairing:
Summary:
Link to Podfic:
HTML available here:
You are also free to crosspost your podfic where ever you'd like.
Can I use my Podfic Bingo podfics for other challenges?
Yes! This comm is designed to fit into your other podfic projects. We just want to give you a little push to experiment a bit more. So if you are already making a podfic for something else, try adding a bit of extra emphasis to fit one of your prompts.
What's the time line for this comm?
Brainstorming: Now-January 29, 2011
Sign Ups: Now-January 29, 2011
Cards Go Out: February 1st
Deadline: December 31, 2011
Like I said, I want you to be able to work your pre-existing podfic projects into this so I'll leave you to it for the rest of the year. You can start posting as soon as you get your prompts and have 11 months to get through as many of them as you want/can.
I have a podfic I did a while ago that fits one of my prompts, can I use that?
No. Only new podfics will count for this challenge.
How do I win?
Like traditional Bingo you can make all kinds of different lines or shapes (- | / \ + L etc.) or you can go for a full blackout of your card and do all the prompts. You don't need to wait until you have a line to post you podfics though, feel free to post as you go. If there's a prompt that isn't in your line that you'd like to do anyway, feel free!
What do I get if I complete a Bingo line/the whole card?
The satisfaction of a job well done? Umm, also, I will try to make banners (if anyone with actual graphics skills wants to do this for me instead, everyone would appreciate it. My graphics skills are practically non-existent :S).
There may also be prizes for a select few based on accomplishments of my choosing but since I will probably be the one making them, that may not happen or they will be completely random in nature. I make no promises!
What if I don't like/can't do one (or more) of the prompts on my card?
Skip that one? Find a different approach to make it work? You don't have to do every prompt (unless you go for a blackout) and the point is to challenge yourself. Even if you try a prompt and feel you failed at it, this is a safe learning environment, feel free to post it anyway and have it count as completed! So what if you attempt at a French accent doesn't sound like anything ever heard of, you tried. Or, hell, your attempt at reading slow came out sounding like a sprint to the finish, at least it didn't sound like your usual hamster on amphetamine, it's still an accomplishment!
I have some great ideas for prompts, wanna hear them?
Yes! Make your way over to the brainstorming post and leave them there.
This all sounds awesome, now how do I sign up?
You can sign up at the Sign Up Post.
I've finished my card, can I have another one?
Umm, sure, I guess. Just leave a request at the Sign Up Post.
How do I contact a mod?
You can leave a comment here or email me at parakaproductions at gmail dot com. If all else fails, feel free to leave a comment on my journal.

Date: 2011-02-13 02:27 am (UTC)What made you decide to have a specific timeline for this anyway? It seems like something that would go well in a "sign up any time, but complete within ___ months" sort of deal. Especially since its a year-long challenge and there's bound to be newcomers stumbling along thoughout the year who might be interested in joining up.

Date: 2011-02-15 05:53 pm (UTC)What made you decide to have a specific timeline for this anyway?
Well, a couple reasons:
1. I've never done this before and I looked at how other bingo comms did it and they all had fixed sign up times and I didn't really stop to question it.
2. Since this is my first time running something like this I'm being kind of cautious. If there's a fixed sign up time it keeps people on equal footing.
3. Having a due date for signing up motivates people to actually sign up, rather than putting it off and never actually signing up.
4. I was afraid of the modly time commitments if I left it open for too long. :S
I might consider leaving it open next year but I'll be honest, reason #3 is a really compelling reason to keep sign ups on a schedule. I think I'd rather have a schedule and go around it for the one off late comers than get rid of it and have less people sign up

Date: 2011-02-15 11:57 pm (UTC)I'm a little vague on the meaning of some of this squares. Do you think you can tell me what the following mean?
-Trans Character
-Different Medium
-Random Fic
It makes me happy that some of the stories I've been eying up are very appropriate for this. <3

Date: 2011-02-16 12:31 am (UTC)Trans Character, means that the fic you read should feature a character that is transgendered (this is a great resource).
Different Medium was first suggested here, where you change up your fandom source. Aka if you normally podfic for TV shows, you podfic something based on a book. That prompt has also been interpreted as trying presenting your podfic in a different medium, such as a podvid.
Random Fic, was explained here.
